As many of you may know, Summer School 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis (ESS), and we are planning some special events to mark the occasion. As part of our 50th plans, we would like to gather stories about how the Summer School has impacted the lives and careers of our former participants and instructors. We would like to solicit from you any short stories or anecdotes from your experience with the ESS that we can share on our website and use for a 50th anniversary scrapbook. We hope to have the scrapbook available to all by the start of Summer School 2017.

Here are some of the materials we would be interested in:

1) Citations to any published scholarly work that relates directly to your Summer School experience (e.g. you came up with the idea for the article in a ESS class; you applied the method you learned in class to the paper you published; you developed important co-author relationships while at the ESS that led to publications). I would be great if, in addition to the citation, you could provide a brief paragraph highlighting the link to the ESS.

2) Any short stories of academic collaboration (a few sentences or a paragraph) that grew out of the ESS, even if you can’t link it to a particular article.

3) Short descriptions of what the summer school has meant to you personally (rather than professionally). We know of a few who have even found spouses at the ESS. We would love to hear those stories, as well.

Please email any citations and short descriptions/stories to Melanie Sawers (mels@essex.ac.uk). We will organize them for inclusion on our website and select some for inclusion in the scrapbook.

Thanks so much for your help and we look forward to hearing from you.
