Announcing the Vera E. Troeger Scholarship for Women in Political Methodology.

The Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis is excited to announce the Vera E. Troeger Scholarship for Women in Political Methodology. These awards are intended to encourage methodological training among female graduate students in political science and to honour the work of Professor Vera E. Troeger, a leading figure in quantitative social science research and a powerful voice in the promotion of women in political science.

The Vera E. Troeger scholarship is open to female students currently enrolled in Political Science PhD programs. The scholarship provides a tuition waiver to attend in-person to one of our two-week sessions in the 2024 Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis (ESS).

Please submit the following materials to essexsummerschoolssdascholarship@essex.ac.uk indicating the email subject “Vera E. Troeger Scholarship.”

  1. 1 – A cover letter stating your research area and how your experience at the ESS will assist you in completing your degree programme. Please indicate which course you intend to take and how this course would help your dissertation work.
  2. 2 – A current CV.
  3. 3 – One letter of recommendation.

 
Only complete applications received by the deadline will be considered.

Deadline: 30 April 2024, 5 pm (BST).

Decisions: Awardees will be notified by 15 May 2024.

Given the volume of applications we receive, we are unfortunately unable to notify non-recipients or to provide feedback on applications.

Selection criteria: Scholarships will be awarded based on how the applicant’s experience at the Essex Summer School would assist them in completing their degree programme (i.e, how the course will help the applicant’s dissertation work).

Points to note:

Successful applicants will be required to submit an ESS application form within 2 weeks of receiving notice of the award. If the application form is not received within this timeframe, ESS maintains the right to withdraw the award and offer it to another candidate.

By accepting the scholarship, you are agreeing to be included in ESS promotional material, including photography that could be used on the ESS website.

FAQs

  • What does the VET scholarship cover?

It covers the tuition for one two-week course offered in the summer 2024. It does not cover accommodation, travel or subsistence expenses.

  • Can I use the VET scholarship for remote (online) participation?

Unfortunately, no. The scholarship is intended to fund in-person attendance (either for in-person only or hybrid courses).

  • Can I apply to the VET scholarship if I have already applied to the ESS?

Yes. In case of receiving the scholarship, the ESS will issue a refund.

  • Can I apply to the ESS before the VET scholarships’ decisions?

Yes. If you are planning to apply before the scholarship decision, please indicate you are also applying to the VET scholarship. In case of receiving the scholarship, the ESS will issue a refund.

  • Can the recommendation letter come in a separate email?

Unfortunately, no. Given the volume of applications we receive, we are only able to consider full applications.
