The participants of Essex Summer School 2024 really enjoyed this year’s Social Programme. The Director of ESS, Professor Ryan Bakker commented ‘participants work hard but they also play hard’ when they study at the school.

The Social Programme offered a variety of activities that catered to diverse interests. Sporting enthusiasts had plenty to choose from, with football, basketball, volleyball, and rounders among the popular options. The Climbing Wall was a particular highlight, providing a fun and challenging experience that many participants eagerly took on.

The social events featured a Welcome Night on arrival day. Attendees were treated to a hot buffet dinner with options like Chilli Con Carne, Curry, and Lasagne, all of which were well-received. Monday evening BBQs, with grilled chicken, burgers, and refreshing salads, became a favourite, especially given the lovely weather that allowed everyone to enjoy the outdoors while relaxing and networking.

Meet and Greet gatherings in the Student Union Bar were well received with pizza and nibbles in plentiful supply. A great chance for participants to get to know each other and their instructors as well.

The Harold Clarke and ESS Professionalisation Speakers Series were well-attended both in-person and online. Esteemed speakers such as Prof. Mark Pickup, Prof. Marco Steenbergen, Prof. Gina Reinhardt, and Dr. Nelson Ruiz provided valuable insights across various topics, enriching the academic experience.

The renowned Wivenhoe Pub Trail, held on Friday evenings, was another standout social event. Participants enjoyed a scenic walk along the Wivenhoe Trail, stopping at four different pubs and soaking in the charming atmosphere of Wivenhoe Quayside.

The Farewell Parties provided a fitting conclusion to the summer school, offering one last opportunity for participants to network, share experiences, and bid farewell to the new friends they had made during their time at Essex Summer School.
